Research Security Training (RST) will be required for senior/key personnel on NIH applications submitted for due dates on or after May 25, 2026. The RST is part of the requirements included in the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022.
The NIH NOT links readers to the NSF Secure Center. The NSF Secure Center has an online training module that users can take and download a certificate of completion. Completing the RST takes about an hour with no interruptions. S
Some organizations are opting to use the Research Security Training module available via CITI. Additionally, the NSF site contains Consolidated Training Module (CTM) download packages that institutions can customize and include in their learning management system (LMS), but notes that any training that addresses cybersecurity, international collaboration, foreign interference, and rules for proper use of funds, disclosure, conflict of commitment, and conflict of interest is acceptable.
Researchers should check with their organization to determine whether the online version is acceptable, or if the RST must be completed via organization-designated training.
