NIH is deciding whether to award or deny a large number of grant applications that it had previously rejected or shelved. The action stems from court agreements resulting from two lawsuits, one led by the Massachusetts attorney general’s office and the other by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
The agreement stemming from the Massachusetts attorney general’s office promises decisions on more than 5,000 grants nationally. On December 29, the date of the agreement, the NIH issued 528 grant decisions, 499 of which were approvals. The agreement in the ACLU case involves 400 grants, and NIH awarded at least 135 out of 146 applications.
